More Proofs for the Deity of Christ Pt. 5
By Sam Shamoun
We continue with our series.
The inspired Scriptures identify Jehovah as the Judge and Lawgiver:
“for the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; He will save us.” Isaiah 33:22
As Judge, Jehovah shall come in flaming fire to not only judge the world in righteousness, but also to avenge his people by destroying his enemies with his sword and fire:
“When my enemies are turned back, they will stumble and perish at Your presence. For you have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging what is right. You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked, You have wiped out their name forever and ever. O you enemy, destructions have come to you for a perpetual end. You have destroyed cities; their memory perished with them. But the Lord remains forever; He has established His throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness; He will give judgment to the peoples in uprightness.” Psalm 9:3-8
“… then all the trees of the forest shall rejoice before the Lord, for He comes to judge the earth. He shall judged the world with righteousness and the peoples with His faithfulness.” Psalm 96:12b-13
“Then you shall see this, and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb; and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward His servants, and His indignation toward His enemies. For the Lord shall come with fire and with His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury and His rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by His sword on all flesh, the Lord shall execute judgment; and the slain of the Lord shall be many.” Isaiah 66:14-16
“The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord takes vengeance on His enemies, and He reserves it for His adversaries; the Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will in no way acquit the guilty. In gale winds and a storm is His way, and clouds are the dust of His feet.” Nahum 1:2-3
The sacred writings further proclaim that Jehovah is an incomparable Teacher whom his people shall see with their own eyes:
“Behold, God is exalted in His power; who teaches like Him?” Job 36:22
“Though the Lord has given you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet He, your Teacher, will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.” Isaiah 30:20
On the other hand, the inspired Christian Scriptures testify that Jesus is the heavenly King and Judge, who comes to avenge his people:
“But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the city officials, crying out, ‘These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them. They are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.’” Acts 17:6-7
“Finally, brothers, we urge and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as you have learned from us how you ought to walk and to please God, you should excel more and more. For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus… and that no man take advantage of and defraud his brother in any matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, as we also have forewarned you and testified.” 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2, 6
In fact, the God-breathed revelation teaches that the Father shall judge no one directly, since he has entrusted all judgment to his beloved Son in order that all may give the Son the same exact honor that they give to the Father:
“The Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all men should honor the Son, JUST AS they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.” John 5:22-23
Christ is also identified as the one and only incomparable Lawgiver, Teacher and Lord,
“But do not be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have ONE Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brothers. And call no man on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Nor be called teachers, for you have ONE Teacher, the Christ.” Matthew 23:8-10
“You call Me Teacher and Lord. You speak accurately, FOR SO I AM. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” John 13:13-14
“There is ONE Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?” James 4:12
Whose Law and commandments everyone must submit to,
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say? Whoever comes to Me and hears MY words and does them, I will show whom he is like: He is like a man who built a house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, but could not shake it, for it was founded on rock. But he who hears and does not obey is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently. Immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:46-49
“to those who are outside the law, as outside the law (being not without God’s law, but under Christ’s law) that I might win those who are outside the law.” 1 Corinthians 9:21 – cf. Galatians 6:2
“‘If you love Me, keep MY commandments… On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you. He who has MY commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father. And I will love him and will reveal Myself to him.’… Jesus answered him, ‘If a man loves Me, he will keep MY word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep MY words. The word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.’” John 14:15, 20-21, 23-24
In recognition of his being the sovereign Lord of all creation, and the divine Son who is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit, whose personal presence remains with his followers till the end of the age:
“Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20
And as the one Lawgiver and Judge who has the power to both save and destroy, Christ is depicted as being the Lord of Hosts, which is an OT name for Yahweh, who is standing at the door,
“Indeed the wages that you kept back by fraud from the laborers who harvested your fields are crying, and the cries of those who harvested have entered into the ears of the Lord of Hosts… Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Notice how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until he receives the early and later rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming the Lord is drawing near. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, lest you be condemned. Look, the Judge is standing at the door.” James 5:4, 7-9
Ready to descend with his powerful angels in flaming fire for the purpose of gathering all the nations before him to avenge his servants,
“This is evidence that God’s judgment, being righteous, will count you worthy of the kingdom of God for which you are suffering. It is a righteous matter with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with HIS mighty angels, in flaming fire taking VENGEANCE on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. They shall be punished with eternal destruction, isolated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of HIS POWER, when HE comes, in that Day, to be glorified in HIS SAINTS and to be marveled at by all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.” 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
“I saw heaven opened. And there was a white horse. He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns. He has a name written, that no one knows but He Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood. His name is called The Word of God. The armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Out of His mouth proceeds a sharp sword, with which He may strike the nations. ‘He shall rule them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the winepress of the fury and wrath of God the Almighty. On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried with a loud voice to all the birds flying in the midst of heaven, ‘Come and gather for the supper of the great God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of commanders, the flesh of strong men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great!’ Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to wage war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. But the beast was captured and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with brimstone. The remnant were slain with the sword which proceeded out of the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds gorged themselves with their flesh.” Revelation 19:11-21
As well as to recompense every person for what s/he has earned,
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. Before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. He will set the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in. I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me, I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? And when did we see You sick or in prison and come to You?’ The King will answer, ‘Truly I say to you, as you have done it for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you have done it for Me.’ Then He will say to those at the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ Then they also will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not serve You?’ He will answer, ‘Truly I say to you, as you did it not for one of the least of these, you did it not for Me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-46
“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at HIS appearing and HIS kingdom… From now on a crown of righteousness is laid up for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing… At my first defense no one stood with me, but everyone forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that through me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. The Lord will deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me for HIS heavenly kingdom, to WHOM be glory forever and ever. Amen.” 2 Timothy 4:1, 8, 16-18
The Holy Bible further teaches that Christ is the One whom believers shall see when he comes riding on the clouds as the divine Son of Man to dwell with his people forever:
“But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to Him, ‘I adjure You by the living God, tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said to him, ‘You have said so. But I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Matthew 26:63-64
“Look! He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.” Revelation 1:7(1)
“But I would not have you ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and arose again, so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we shall be forever with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
“Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that I write to you. For you know perfectly that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night… For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we should live together with Him.” 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2, 9-10
Hence, Christ is the incomparable Teacher, Lawgiver, and Judge whom the OT prophets said would be seen by his people. This means that Jesus is none other than Jehovah God Almighty Incarnate (although he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit)!
Amen! Come Lord Jesus, come and dwell with your saints forever! We pray that you will preserve us in your perfect power and love, so that we can be part of that blessed host who will be given the grace to see your glorious and beautiful face, and to live in your presence forever and ever! Amen!

(1) In this passage from Revelation, the blessed Apostle John describes Jesus as the Jehovah whom the prophet Zechariah claimed would one day come to save the remnant of Israel. This is the day when the whole nation shall mourn over their sin of having pierced their very own God!
“The Lord will deliver the tents of Judah as before, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of those dwelling in Jerusalem will not eclipse Judah. On that day the Lord will defend those residing in Jerusalem; and even the one who stumbles among them will be as David on that day. And the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord going out before them. On that day I will seek to destroy all the nations who come out against Jerusalem. And I will pour out on the house of David and over those dwelling in Jerusalem a spirit of favor and supplication so that they look TO ME, WHOM THEY HAVE PIERCED THROUGH. And they will mourn over him as one mourns for AN ONLY CHILD and weep bitterly over him AS A FIRSTBORN. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as that of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. The land will mourn with each family by itself: the family of the house of David by themselves, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by themselves, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Levi by themselves, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by themselves, and their wives also by themselves; and all the families that remain, each by itself and their wives by themselves. On that day there will be a spring opened up for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and impurity.” Zechariah 12:7-14, 13:1
John is basically stating that the Jehovah whom Israel pierced, and whom they will someday recognize as their very own God, is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ himself!
John also tells us when the Jews pierced Jehovah their God:
“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished.’ And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. Since it was the Day of Preparation, to prevent bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath day (for that Sabbath day was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was dead already, they did not break His legs. However, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. He who saw it has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, that you may believe. For these things happened so that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken,’ and again another Scripture says, ‘They shall look on Him whom they have pierced.’” John 19:30-37
According to John, Israel had their God pierced when they handed Jesus over to the Romans to be crucified and thrust through by a soldier’s spear. And yet the good news is that Christ’s return from heaven shall result in the salvation of all Israel, not in their destruction, in perfect fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy!
“For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, lest you be wise in your own estimation, for a partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: ‘The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will remove ungodliness from Jacob’; ‘for this is My covenant with them, when I shall take away their sins.’ As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sake, but as regarding the election, they are beloved for the sake of the patriarchs. For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.” Romans 11:25-29
