The Word of God Issue Settled Indeed! Pt. 2

By Sam Shamoun

We proceed from where we previously left off.

God is immortal, pure, and all-powerful. In contrast, creation is mortal, impure, and vulnerable. Man is weak, ignorant and impure whereas God is all powerful, all knowing and all pure.

As we are about to now see, the above objection ends up proving more than the Muslim(s) bargained for.

A. Allah pollutes his essence.

If we were to follow the logic of this argument to its conclusion then the Muslim(s) will have to accept that their god became mortal, weak, ignorant, impure and vulnerable since the Islamic corpus affirm that, at various times and in various ways, Allah entered and became a part of his creation. Here are some of the ways that the Muslim deity did so.

1. The corruption of Allah’s word/speech and knowledge.

The Quran teaches that it is a book which Muhammad caused to be written down:

Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book that makes (things) manifest. Surely We have revealed it -- an Arabic Quran -- that you may understand. We narrate to you the best of narratives, by Our revealing to you this Quran, though before this you were certainly one of those who did not know. S. 12:1-3 Shakir

Thus have We sent this down - an arabic Qur'an - and explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order that they may fear God, or that it may cause their remembrance (of Him). S. 20:113 A. Yusuf Ali

Those who disbelieve say: "This (the Qur'an) is nothing but a lie that he (Muhammad) has invented, and others have helped him at it, so that they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie." And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon." Say: "It (this Qur'an) has been sent down by Him (Allah) (the Real Lord of the heavens and earth) Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." S. 25:4-6 Hilali-Khan

“The revelation of this Book (the Qur'an) is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. Verily, We have sent down the Book to you (O Muhammad) in truth… Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur'an) for mankind in truth…” S. 39:1-2, 41Hilali-Khan

This means that the supposed uncreated speech and knowledge of Allah became a part of creation. In fact, the hadiths claim that Muhammad’s companions produced multiple copies and versions of the Arabic Quran, many of which were commanded to be burned and destroyed by the third caliph Uthman bin Affan:

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman came to Uthman at the time when the people of Sham and the people of Iraq were Waging war to conquer Arminya and Adharbijan. Hudhaifa was afraid of their (the people of Sham and Iraq) differences in the recitation of the Qur'an, so he said to 'Uthman, "O chief of the Believers! Save this nation before they differ about the Book (Quran) as Jews and the Christians did before." So 'Uthman sent a message to Hafsa saying, "Send us the manuscripts of the Qur'an so that we may compile the Qur'anic materials in perfect copies and return the manuscripts to you." Hafsa sent it to 'Uthman. 'Uthman then ordered Zaid bin Thabit, 'Abdullah bin AzZubair, Said bin Al-As and 'AbdurRahman bin Harith bin Hisham to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies. 'Uthman said to the three Quraishi men, "In case you disagree with Zaid bin Thabit on any point in the Qur'an, then write it in the dialect of Quraish, the Qur'an was revealed in their tongue." They did so, and when they had written many copies, 'Uthman returned the original manuscripts to Hafsa. 'Uthman sent to every Muslim province one copy of what they had copied, and ordered that all the other Qur'anic materials, whether written in fragmentary manuscripts or whole copies, be burnt. Said bin Thabit added, "A Verse from Surat Ahzab was missed by me when we copied the Qur'an and I used to hear Allah's Apostle reciting it. So we searched for it and found it with Khuzaima bin Thabit Al-Ansari. (That Verse was): 'Among the Believers are men who have been true in their covenant with Allah.' (33.23) (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 61, Number 510)

So Allah’s eternal word/knowledge was not only written down by impure hands on impure materials, it was even burned and destroyed by weak, ignorant human beings!

With that said, note all the major problems that this raises for the Muslim(s) that produced this video:

A.      Creation is mortal, impure, weak and vulnerable.
B.       The Quran is a part of creation since the codices (masahif), books (kutub), pages (suhuf) etc. which contain it, and the breasts and mouths of the men that recite it, are created, material objects.
C.      Therefore, the Quran is mortal, impure, weak and vulnerable.
D.      The Quran is the uncreated speech/word of Allah, and therefore one of his essential attributes.
E.       The producer(s) of this YouTube video believe(s) that the Quran is also the eternal knowledge of Allah.
F.       The attributes of Allah and his knowledge are not other than him.
G.      Allah has therefore become a part of creation through the inscripturation of his speech/word/knowledge in all the multitudes of manuscripts and books which contain the Quran.
H.      As such, Allah (or at least an essential aspect of his very essence) has become mortal, impure, weak and vulnerable.
I.         In other words, Allah’s very own knowledge and speech/word (and therefore Allah himself) have become contaminated and polluted by becoming creation.

2. Allah defiles both himself and his spirit.

This is just the beginning of the Muslims’ woes.

The Quran has Allah descending with his angels in the shades of clouds,

Do they then wait for anything other than that Allah should come to them in the shadows of the clouds and the angels? (Then) the case would be already judged. And to Allah return all matters (for decision). S. 2:210 Hilali-Khan

Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? S. 89:21-23 Pickthall

And dwelling inside a tree in order to appear to and speak with his servant Moses:

Hath there come unto thee the story of Moses? When he saw a fire and said unto his folk: Lo! Wait! I see a fire afar off. Peradventure I may bring you a brand therefrom or may find guidance at the fire. And when he reached IT, he was called by name: O Moses! Lo! I, even I, am thy Lord, So take off thy shoes, for lo! thou art in the holy valley of Tuwa. And I have chosen thee, so hearken unto that which is inspired. Lo! I, even I, am Allah, There is no God save Me. So serve Me and establish worship for My remembrance. S. 20:9-14 Pickthall

(Remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his household: "Verily! I have seen a fire, I will bring you from there some information, or I will bring you a burning brand, that you may warm yourselves." But when he came to it, he was called: "Blessed is whosoever IS IN THE FIRE, and whosoever is round about it! And glorified be Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). O Musa (Moses)! Verily! IT IS I, ALLAH, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. S. 27:7-9 Hilali-Khan

Then, when Moses had fulfilled the term, and was travelling with his housefolk, he saw in the distance a fire and said unto his housefolk: Bide ye (here). Lo! I see in the distance a fire; peradventure I shall bring you tidings thence, or a brand from the fire that ye may warm yourselves. And when he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed field, FROM THE TREE: O Moses! Lo! I, even I, am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; S. 28:29-30 Pickthall

We are further told in the so-called sound ahadith that Allah literally descends to the lowest heavens every last third of the night:

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle said, "Every night when it is the last third of the night, our Lord, the Superior, the Blessed, DESCENDS to the nearest heaven and says: Is there anyone to invoke Me that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone asking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him? (See Hadith No. 246,Vol. 2). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 93, Number 586)

Abu Sa'id and Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Allah waits till when one-third of the first part of the night is over; He descends to the lowest heaven and says: It there any supplicator of forgiveness? Is there any penitent? Is there any petitioner (for mercy and favour)? Is there any solicitor? -till it is daybreak. (Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 1660)

These ayat and narrations raise at least three major challenges to the claim that Allah is the true God and that the Quran is God’s word.

First, the only way that Allah could descend after the third part of the night is if the earth is flat, since it is always night at some place on the planet in a spherical earth. This indicates that Muhammad erroneously believed in a flat earth, a fact confirmed by the following Quranic text:

Nor even how the earth has been flattened out? S. 88:20 T. B Irving

Second, by descending and entering into the lowest heaven and the earth, Allah is making direct contact with his creation, since the Muslim scripture plainly testifies that the heavens and the earth were all brought into being at some specific point in time:

Say: 'What, do you disbelieve in Him who created the earth in two days, and do you set up compeers to Him? That is the Lord of all Being. And He set therein firm mountains over it, and He blessed it, and He ordained therein its diverse sustenance in four days, equal to those who ask. Then He lifted Himself to heaven when it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth, "Come willingly, or unwillingly!" They said, "We come willingly." So He determined them as seven heavens in two days, and revealed its commandment in every heaven.' S. 41:9-12 Arberry

Third, Allah’s descent implies that he is a being that is in continuous motion, constantly changing his location and direction on a daily basis. As such, Allah is regularly experiencing profound changes to his essential nature, and is also bound by/in time and space.

But there’s more. Allah had his very own spirit appear in human form and then caused him to enter into a woman through her private parts in order to get her to conceive a child:

And mention Marium in the Book when she drew aside from her family to an eastern place; So she took a veil (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our spirit, and there appeared to her a well-made man. She said: Surely I fly for refuge from you to the Beneficent God, if you are one guarding (against evil). He said: I am only an apostle of your Lord: That I will give you a pure boy. She said: When shall I have a boy and no mortal has yet touched me, nor have I been unchaste? He said: Even so; your Lord says: It is easy to Me: and that We may make him a sign to men and a mercy from Us, and it is a matter which has been decreed. S. 19:16-21 Shakir

And she who guarded her private parts, and we breathed INTO HER of our Spirit, and we made her and her son a sign unto the worlds. S. 21:91 Palmer

And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded her PRIVATE PARTS, and we breathed THEREIN of our spirit and she verified the words of her Lord and His books, and was of the devout. S. 66:12 Palmer

To sum up what we have learned from the foregoing verses and hadiths, note the following:

A.      Allah descends every night to the lowest heaven to answer prayers.
B.       Allah entered into a tree in order to speak directly with Moses.
C.      At the last day, Allah will descend to the earth in clouds accompanied by his angels.
D.      Allah’s spirit came to the earth in physical form to announce to Mary that he would give her a pure son.
E.       Allah then breathed his spirit into Mary’s physical body in order to cause her to miraculously conceive a baby without any sexual intercourse.

This now raises some uncomfortable challenges for the Muslim(s) producer(s) to address:

A.      Creation in general, and mankind specifically, is mortal, impure, weak, ignorant and vulnerable.
B.       Allah and his spirit have entered into and made direct contact with creation.
C.      Allah instantiated himself in a tree for the purpose of revealing himself to Moses.
D.      Allah’s spirit took on human form and entered into a human body.
E.       In so doing, Allah and his spirit ended up becoming mortal, impure, weak, ignorant and vulnerable.
F.       In short, Allah allowed both himself and his spirit to become defiled by entering into and coming in contact with his impure and imperfect creation.

It is now time for us to turn our attention to Muhammad.

B. Muhammad is impure, weak and ignorant.

According to the logic of these Muslims, their prophet has to be an impure, mortal, weak, ignorant, and vulnerable creature, a fact which the Quran itself accepts:

Surely, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur'an) in truth that you might judge between men by that which Allah has shown you (i.e. has taught you through Divine Inspiration), so be not a pleader for the treacherous. And seek the Forgiveness of Allah, certainly, Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And argue not on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Verily, Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer of his trust, and indulges in crime. S. 4:105-107 Hilali-Khan

May Allah forgive you (O Muhammad). Why did you grant them leave (for remaining behind, you should have persisted as regards your order to them to proceed on Jihad), until those who told the truth were seen by you in a clear light, and you had known the liars? S. 9:43 Hilali-Khan

So be thou patient; surely God's promise is true. And ask forgiveness for thy sin, and proclaim the praise of thy Lord at evening and dawn. S. 40:55 Arberry

Know thou therefore that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for thy sin, and for the believers, men and women. God knows your going to and fro, and your lodging. S. 47:19 Arberry

Muhammad even had his deity threaten to kill him and condemn him to hell if he failed in his mission and/or compromised his faith:

And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day. S. 10:15 Pickthall

Indeed they were near to seducing thee from that We revealed to thee, that thou mightest forge against Us another, and then they would surely have taken thee as a friend; and had We not confirmed thee, surely thou wert near to inclining unto them a very little; then would We have let thee taste the double of life and the double of death; and then thou wouldst have found none to help thee against Us. S. 17:73-75 Arberry

And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad), as it was to those (Allah's Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers." S. 39:65 Hilali-Khan

Had he invented against Us any sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand, then We would surely have cut his life-vein and not one of you could have defended him. S. 69:44-47

We, thus, have another dilemma for this/these Muslim(s):

A.      Creation, specifically man, is mortal, impure, ignorant, weak and vulnerable.
B.       Muhammad was a human creature.
C.      Muhammad, therefore, was nothing more than a mortal, impure, ignorant, weak and vulnerable human being.

For more on Muhammad’s sinfulness please read the following discussion:

We now come to the final section.

C. The absolute, essential purity of Christ and his blessed Mother.

The other problem with this argument is that the Islamic sources proclaim that both Jesus and his beloved mother were/are perfectly holy and absolutely sinless from their very conceptions.

Here is how the Quran describes the human conception and birth of both Mary and her glorious Son:

And when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah hath chosen thee AND MADE THEE PURE, and hath preferred thee above (all) the women of creation. S. 3:42 Pickthall

And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East, And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her OUR SPIRIT and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man. She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art God-fearing. He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I MAY BESTOW on thee A FAULTLESS SON. She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste? He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And (it will be) that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a thing ordained. S. 19:16-21 Pickthall

Here is another rendering of Q. 19:19:

He said, 'I am but a messenger come from thy Lord, to give thee a boy MOST PURE. Arberry

And note how the Muslim expositors and sound ahadith understood explained these Quranic statements:

"They will go to Musa and say, 'O Musa, you are the Messenger of Allah. Allah preferred you with His message and His Word above all othr people. Intercede with your Lord for us. Do you not see what we are suffering?' He will say, 'My Lord is angry today with such anger as has never existed before nor will again. I killed a soul which I was not commanded to kill. Go to someone else. Go to 'Isa.'

"They will go to 'Isa and say, 'O 'Isa! You are the Messenger of Allah and His Word which He cast to Maryam and a spirit from Him. You spoke to people while in the cradle. Intercede with your Lord on our behalf. Do you not see what we are suffering?' 'Isa will say, 'My Lord is angry today with such anger as has never existed before nor will again,' AND HE DID NOT MENTION A SIN. 'O my soul! My soul! My soul! Go to someone else. Go to Muhammad.' (Bewley, The Sahih Collection of al-Bukhari, Chapter 68. Book of Tafsir; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

God has elected you, because of your being above lust, and made you pure, from the vices of reprehensible character traits and attributes, and He has chosen you above the women, of the concupiscent souls variegated by despicable acts and vile natures. (Kashani Tafsir; bold and underline emphasis ours)

It is possible that this was the beginning of a message from the angels to Mary elevating her state. It is possible that she may have heard their words and seen them, or that she did not see them but heard them as a voice calling out to her, 'Truly God has chosen you because of your having been preferred, and singled you out from your kind and peers, and purified you from what is indecent and sinful BY A BEAUTIFUL IMMUNITY and from having physical contact with men, and has chosen you above the women of the world of your time'. The point of repeating the mention of being chosen is firstly, He has chosen you through special gifts, position, and an exalted state; and secondly, He has chosen you to bear Jesus without a father, and no woman can ever be compared to you UNTIL THE DAY OF RESURRECTION. Because of that He said: above all women of the worlds. (Al Qushairi Tafsir; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

Suffice it to say this now raises some serious problems for the theology of this/these Muslim producer(s), since his/her/their argument end up proving that Christ and his blessed mother are not creatures.

Since the Quran claims that there is not a single creature that is absolutely pure and sinless,

If God were to punish men for their wrong-doing, He would not leave, on the (earth), a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: When their Term expires, they would not be able to delay (the punishment) for a single hour, just as they would not be able to anticipate it (for a single hour). S. 16:61Yusuf Ali

If God were to punish men according to what they deserve. He would not leave on the back of the (earth) a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: when their Term expires, verily God has in His sight all His Servants. S. 35:45 Y. Ali

And since the maker(s) of this video argued that man is impure, weak etc., then this means that the Islamic sources are either contradicting themselves. Or they are left with the fact that according to their own religious texts and reasoning, the blessed Lord Jesus and his glorious mother are no mere mortals, but are actually two divine Persons that appeared in the flesh!

Note, once again, the logic behind this argument:

A.      Creation in general, and mankind specifically, are mortal, weak, vulnerable, impure and ignorant.
B.       Christ and his mother are absolutely pure, being free of all imperfections and transgressions.
C.      Therefore, neither Christ nor his mother can be a part of creation.
D.      Since they are not creation they must be uncreated, and therefore eternal.
E.       Since they are eternal they must be divine, and are therefore two divine persons that coexist alongside Allah.
F.       And since both Jesus and Mary came into contact with creation and still remained absolutely perfect and untainted, this refutes the assertion that to become a part of creation is to become impure and/or imperfect.
